Lino Grandi is a 3D artist, technical director, and rendering specialist with over thirty years of experience in computer graphics. Since 2018, he has been working at OTOY, contributing to the development and evolution of OctaneRender integration for Blender, the definition of new workflows, and direct comparison with international artists and productions. Throughout his career he has collaborated with high-profile studios, brands and productions, participating in projects for JJ's Duster. Abrams, Daft Punk, Adidas and Coca-Cola, as well as collaborations with major Japanese animation companies.
A central part of his research is devoted to non-photorealistic rendering and toon shading, with a particular focus on the aesthetics of Japanese cinematic anime in the late ’80s and ’90s, a period that profoundly influenced his visual language. His work explores techniques capable of transferring the control of light, shadow, line, perspective, and composition typical of traditional 2D animation into 3D, combining it with contemporary rendering tools and pipelines. He is also an international teacher and speaker, with talks dedicated to Blender, OctaneRender and professional workflows for the production of stylized images.
