Terry Ackland

Production Designer

Terry Ackland-Snow began his career in the film and television industry in 1961 at the age of 18. His first assignment was to work in the art department as a junior draughtsman on 'The Tell Tale Heart' with Norman G Arnold at Danziga Studios in Elstree. This was closely followed by the television series, 'Richard the Lionheart,' and then his first major feature film, 'In the Cool of the Day,' designed by Sir Ken Adam.

Terry went on to travel and work on over 80 feature films and television productions worldwide. In a career spanning over 40 years, he has worked with some of the industry's finest directors and technicians on iconic films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Aliens, Labyrinth, and two James Bond films. Through his experiences, he has accumulated a wealth of cinema knowledge that led him, when stepping away from productions, to create a training school for Art Direction, Film Design International, now in its 21st year, based at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.

His passion for the film industry and his belief in enabling new talents to build their careers, along with his desire to widely share his deep knowledge, led him to write and publish two books, 'The Art of Illusion' (2017) and more recently, 'The Art of Cinema' (2022).
